Diversity In Action: Independence Day in Plainfield!

Plainfield Advisory Commission on Hispanic Affairs (PACHA)

This year's (92nd Annual) Plainfield July 4th Parade kicked off at about 10:15 am this morning with the wonderful theme of "Diversity In Action." This year's Grand Marshal was Flor Gonzalez, President of the Plainfield-based Latin American Coalition and Chairwoman of the Plainfield Advisory Commission on Hispanic Affairs.

Led by Plainfield Mayor Adrian O. Mapp, the floats, stilt walkers, balloons, step teams, motorcycles, classic cars, elected officials, and community folks came together to celebrate our great and diverse city. The Plainfield Democratic City Committee, under the chairmanship of Adrian Mapp, also joined the parade for the first time this year. Even as we celebrate "Independence Day," though, we must reflect on the unfulfilled promise of our country, best exemplified in this speech by (my hero) Frederick Douglass, "What, to the Slave, is the Fourth of July?" written during the antebellum era in the United States when the freedoms enumerated in the constitution were still denied to people of African descent.

    I'd like to thank the Division of Recreation under the capable leadership of Veronica Taylor for producing a really wonderful day. In spite of a few drops of rain, My son and I had a great time from the parade to the concert and fireworks. It looked like all hands were on deck performing their assignments with precision and professionalism from what I could see. The DJ at Richmond Street had me bopping my head to his music thru the whole parade. There was a positive charge in the air at the concert with wonderful performers and the fireworks were excellent. Great job! Looking forward to the next one.
